So David’s life comes to an end. We’ve seen more about this man than any other. More than Abraham or Moses, because through his Psalms we’ve glimpsed the inner man. Not a perfect individual, but someone remarkable.

Psalm 131 brings David full circle. As an old man, who writes “I have stilled and quietened my soul; like a weaned child with its mother.” Real faith. Jesus will tell us that we need to become like a little child to enter the kingdom of God. David’s last years are marred by another of his sons trying to grab the kingship for himself. Adonijah fancies himself in much the way Absalom did. Nathan arranges pre-emptive action to ensure that Bathsheba’s son Solomon becomes king. Why did he choose Solomon?
Did he see something in that young man that suggested he would be a king in David’s mould? It is easy enough to see through the likes of Absalom and Adonijah - looks, pride, but no depth. But what did wise old Nathan spot in Solomon? And was he right? Tomorrow, and days to come, may tell.
