Day 97: The story of Saul

Samuel’s leadership is wise and balanced, but even he cannot keep the Israelites on track. The people want to be like other nations, and have their own king. I don’t think Samuel approves, but finds himself unable to refuse.

Samuel’s wisdom didn’t get passed on to his sons. Like Eli’s sons, they despised their father’s goodness, and behaved corruptly. So the people don’t want a dynasty based on Samuel, no matter how good he is. They ask for a king. Samuel doesn’t like the idea, but listens to God who tells him to go ahead with it.
The chosen man, Saul, seems an excellent choice. He is humble, open to God’s spirit, and perhaps best of all, doesn’t want the job. Samuel (perhaps through gritted teeth) duly proclaims him king.
