Day 101: David's popularity increases

Everybody likes David. It’s hard not to. He has a jaunty faith in God, that sees him through the battle against Goliath, that makes him and Jonathan firm friends, and that stays with him no matter what.

Jonathan, who as we’ve already seen, was a bit of a swashbuckler, takes a shine to David as soon as he sees him kill Goliath. “This is my kind of guy.” Saul is more practical and sees that David will be a good asset to the army. But recruiting him hurts Saul’s self-esteem ad the demons of depression return. Hearing people sing “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” is not calculated to please.
He takes a pop at David one day, in a fit of rage, and thereafter tries giving him ever more dangerous assignments. He even hopes that his daughter, who has fallen in love with David, will lead him astray.
Meanwhile, two Psalms give us insight into David's spiritual life. This is what makes David so special. Up to now, relationship with God have been based on duty and obedience. This is the first hint I have read of something different - a relationship of love, with a God who is like a friend. “Lead me, LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies—make your way straight before me. “ (Psalm 5:8)
