Day 36: The priesthood

I’ve often thought how remarkable it was that the nation of Israel devoted one twelfth of its population to the task of worshipping God. That was basically what the tribe of Levi was for. And of course, they had to be supported by the other 11 tribes. What would Britain look like if a similar proportion of our people and wealth was devoted to God.
Different, I should think.

Garments of the priests continued
Exodus 28: 31-43
Consecration of the priests
Exodus 29:1-25
Food for the priests
Exodus 29:26-37
Continual burnt offering
Exodus 29:38-46
Sabbath rest
Exodus 31:12-18

The sacrifices are described in gory detail. What must the tabernacle have smelt like? And how costly it was for the Israelites in the desert to be slaughtering their livestock and burning them as sacrifices to the Lord? This was their currency, their wealth and their future. It would really teach them not to rely on their own resources, but to rely on God. No meat for dinner tomorrow, only manna.
