Daniel has time in Babylon to meditate and pray. He comes to understand that the exile is due to the sins of Israel, and he takes it upon himself to confess the sins of the nation to God. He is rewarded by the appearance of Gabriel with an extremely cryptic message(!) Psalm 102 captures the feeling of a man in exile, wasting away because of his distance from God and all that would strengthen and renew him. No doubt Daniel felt like this a lot of the time, but it didn’t stop him obeying Jeremiah’s command to “seek the welfare” of the nation where he found himself, becoming as useful to successive kings in Babylon as Joseph was to Pharaoh.
But their wait is over. Cyrus gives the decree: “Go and build a new Temple,” and the people respond. “Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.” (Psalm 85:11)
