Day 218: The Lord’s judgements

Jeremiah turns his attention to the other nations.
The destruction of Moab
Jeremiah 48:1-10
Cities of Moab destroyed
Jeremiah 48:11-25
No escape for Moab
Jeremiah 48:26-47
The Lord’s judgement on Ammon
Jeremiah 49:1-6
His judgement of Edom
Jeremiah 49:7-22
His judgement on Damascus
Jeremiah 49:23-27
His judgement on Kedar and Hazor
Jeremiah 49:28-33
His judgement of Elam
Jeremiah 49:34-39

As Jeremiah surveys the other nations round about Judah, most of whom have been a thorn in Israel’s side at one time or another, he perceives one common fate descending on them all. The might of Babylon will sweep across them all like the incoming tide. All alike will be ruined, their pride brought low.
What interests me is that most of the time Jeremiah doesn’t mention who is doing the destroying, or if he does, he attributes it directly to God. The Babylonians are acting as God’s agents, carrying out his will. Just as we say of a king, “He built this castle,” or “He sacked this town.” but don’t mention the builders or soldiers who did the actual work, so Jeremiah recognises that God is the planter and uprooter of nations, Nebuchnezzar just his spade.
