Chaos is the order of the day. The kings of Israel and Judah are fighting to keep their land and their people’s loyalty. They look all around for help, but not often do they seek it from God.

Difficult times for the people of God: “In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress.” (2 Chronicles 15:5-6) Kings are attacking each other, fighting for the throne, they are forgetting God and worshipping anyone and anything.
Alone in this chaos, Asa stands out as trying to do the right thing. But even he does not trust God entirely - either in military matters, or when he became ill. God resorts to speaking via prophets - brave people in the tradition of Nathan, who risk the king’s anger by telling him how it is. Hanani, Jehu and Azariah - their names are remembered almost as much as the kings they call to account, but sadly their rulers seldom listen to them.
