One of the points of a genealogy is to show that God is interested in individuals. Each one is named, remembered and recorded. God’s faithfulness extends down the generations. Living in a village, I know the power of family names. In my churchyard, on the War Memorial, in the children at the school, family names are preserved.
Another function for the Bible scholar is showing us when particular Bible books reached their final form. Exodus lists down as far as Aaron’s grandson. It also says, “This is the same Moses and Aaron to whom the LORD said, Bring the Israelites out of Egypt” (6:26) So Moses and Aaron are validated by their descent from Levi, one of the 12 tribes.
