Day 69: Laws and directives

We haven’t had any laws for a few days, so we really ought to put that right. Legal enthusiasts will be having withdrawal symptoms.

Israelites to be a distinctive people
Deuteronomy 14:1-21
Regarding tithes
Deuteronomy 14:22-29
The 7th year of release
Deuteronomy 15: 1-18
Regarding the firstlings of cattle
Deuteronomy 15:19-23
The yearly feasts
Deuteronomy 16:1-17
Appointment of judges and other directives
Deuteronomy 16:18-22
Sacrifices to be perfect
Deuteronomy 17:1
Penalty for idolatry
Deuteronomy 17:2-7

God wants his people to be distinctive and different from those around them. Many of these commands would have that effect but there is a cost. Only eating clean food means that certain foods will not be available. They will need faith that there will still be enough. Releasing slaves after 6 years, and being generous to the poor is costly. They will need to have faith that they will still have enough. Giving time and offerings to God in elaborate worship is costly. They will need to have faith that they will still have enough time and resources.
God promises that he will supply their needs. Can they trust him? God wants it to be a daily choice. Trust me today, and I will provide for you today. Trust me tomorrow, and the same will be true.
