Day 348: Paul’s letter to the Ephesians

Today’s letter has even more elevated theology.
The believer’s position in Christ
Ephesians 1:1-14
Paul’s prayer for wisdom and revelation
Ephesians 1:15-23
The riches of God’s grace
Ephesians 2:1-10
Jews and Gentiles one in Christ
Ephesians 2:11-22
The mystery of the church
Ephesians 3:1-13
Paul’s second prayer
Ephesians 3:14-21
Ministries in the church
Ephesians 4:1-16
The walk of the believer
Ephesians 4:17-32

Paul starts in heaven with this letter, describing the Ephesians’ position in heavenly terms, rather than earthly ones. Then he reminds them that they were all nowhere before - lost in their sins - and it didn’t matter whether they were Jew or Gentile, and that all alike have been reconciled to God through Jesus.
Given this amazing heavenly perspective, Paul turns to how it should affect the Ephesians’ living. He urges them to seek unity, he talks about the gifts that God gives to enable the church to function – similar themes to those he used with the Corinthians but expressed in a very different style – and then he talks about the body of Christ, how it should be growing in a healthy way. Holiness of life, not sensuality, compassion and kindness , not selfishness and quarrelling, forgiveness, not anger, should be their characteristics. The breath of heaven has its savour in all his words.
