More vivid images flash past our eyes - the mustard seed, the yeast, the hidden treasure, the pearl. All these have the same theme - something small and unseen, secret even, has great potential or great effect.
Another theme is that of dividing good from evil. The weeds in the field, the unwanted fish in the net, both willl be unerringly sorter out by the angels at the end of the age. Then it will be obvious which is which, but it isn’t obvious now.
Mixed in with this are two remarkable demonstrations of Jesus’ power. He is able to calm the storm on the lake, and cal, the storm of a demonised man’s troubled mind. These events prompt questions from the disciples: “who exactly is this we are following?”
