Moses deserves some tributes, he is a leader like no other we have seen so far. So today I’m looking forward to some Psalms, to hearing his life extolled in song.
30 days of mourning for Moses
Deuteronomy 34:8, 10-12
Joshua, the new leader
Deuteronomy 34:9
Psalms summing up previous history of Israel
Psalm 78:12-66, 105:16-45, 106:1-33, 135:1-20
In fact, of course, it is God who is extolled in these Psalms. And Moses would have been happy with that. He was uncommonly humble, and would not have wanted to be the centre of attention. God’s mighty acts in bringing his chosen people out of Egypt is celebrated. I was struck by the description of manna as “the bread of angels” (Psalm 78:25). I don;t think the Israelites who has existed on the stuff for 40 years would have said that - I expect they were heartily fed up of it by the end!
But the Psalms remind me that it was God who got then through, not Moses. It was God who led them, punished them, forgave them, and ultimately gave them their land. They owe it all to him.
