I’ve been living with Moses for nearly 6 weeks. Every day his struggle to lead the Israelites has been the focus of my morning thoughts. He didn’t ask for this job, but he did it for 50 years, and there never was a leader like him in the whole history of Israel. What a remarkable man he was, and how interesting is this verse in describing him: Numbers 23:12 - “Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.”

Moses now pronounces his blessing on the twelve tribes, calling to mind the blessing that Jacob gave, oh so long ago. It’s quite similar in tone - comparing the tribes to lordly beats of prey, enjoying the fruits of the land.
Moses takes a long look over all the land of Canaan, the land he had sweated and toiled to bring the Israelites into. He will not set foot on it, but he dies in the confidence that the people he has served will go in and possess it.
There is no shrine to mark Moses’ grave, God himself was the undertaker, and we trust that the two of them are still continuing their conversations. “The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.” (Exodus 33:11)
