Jesus was given a hasty burial because the sabbath was about to start. Two secret disciples. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, stepped up and helped the stricken women to lay the body into a cave in the rock, the gift of Joseph. The Romans sealed it and guarded it, to avoid any monkey business, and there things stayed while the women waited out the sabbath.
But when they arrived back at daybreak on Sunday, they found they had missed the most momentous event in history. The tomb was empty, they knew not how, and confusion reigned about what happened. Stories of angels, of guards petrified by fear or bought off with money, all wild attempts to explain the unexplainable.
The tomb was empty. What had happened? John, perhaps, was able to believe the truth. But everyone else needed some proof. And Mary got it first. In a tender encounter with her Lord, Jesus reassures her that even death couldn’t stop him for long, and that he will soon recommission his baffled disciples.
