It feels like the end is very close now. We hear about the death of Jehoiakim, the short lived reign of his son Jehoiachin, and then Zedekiah, installed as puppet king by Nebuchadnezzar, who has helped himself to the treasures of the Temple.
Jeremiah watched as thousands of people were carried off, and in chilling words he says, “none will sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah.” God had promised that there would always be a descendant of David on the throne, and now that promise is to be broken.
With stunning naivete, Zedekiah sends messaengers to ask Jeremiah if there is any chance God might be about the miraculously deliver them: “Inquire now of the LORD for us because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. Perhaps the LORD will perform wonders for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.” (Jeremiah 21:2) Jeremiah doesn’t mince his words in replying. Your time’s up, you might as well open the doors and let Nebuchadnezzar in.
