Jeremiah’s chances of getting through to people are being further harmed by false prophets who are going around saying that everything will be OK.
But the strain is telling on Jeremiah. In a passage that is reminiscent of Job, he complains bitterly to God about the injustice of his situation. He is doing what he had been told, he is faithful, yet he is getting it in the neck! God, this is too much! God says that he will protect the prophet, but that he will still be rejected ad ignored. In fact, God wants him to ignore the people, because they are destined for destruction. He’s not allowed to mix with them, to join in their joys and woes.
But there is beginning to be a new message - looking beyond the exile, God is starting to promise a return. A second Exodus - that’s putting it too strongly, but there are promises that exile is not the end of the story.
