The Temple will be Solomon’s great contribution to the life of Israel. But David wanted to build it. He wasn’t allowed to. Like Moses, who could come to the edge of the Promised Land but not enter it, all David can do is the quantity surveying.
David’s preparations
1 Chronicles 22:1-5
His instructions to Solomon
1 Chronicles 22:6-16
His commands to the princes
1 Chronicles 22:17-19
The Levites and their duties
1 Chronicles 23:2-6, 24-32, 24:20-31
Divisions of priests
1 Chronicles 24:1-19
Singers and musicians
1 Chronicles 25:1-31
Today’s topic allows the Chronicler to get back to his favourite theme: the minutiae of worship. David’s instructions to his son sound just like Moses in Deuteronomy. I can almost hear Frank Sinatra warming up again in the background. You can see why people say that these books belong to the same period - a period when maintaining correct worship had become the thing that held the kingdom together.
