We begin to see the dark side of Samson’s character. He can’t keep control of the situation he has created by telling a riddle, and gives in to his wife’s pleading. His anger burns.
Meanwhile, in Shiloh, we see Eli’s sons misusing their position, helping themselves to choice cuts from people’s sacrifices, making free with the women serving at the altar, and treating their father’s mild-mannered rebukes with contempt. But the story is told from the perspective of God being on the point of action. He’s destined them for destruction.
So he speaks to his chosen instrument, Samuel, and gives the boy a blood-curdling message to pass on to Eli.
Finally, we hear about Jephthah, and an international dispute. Jephthah appears to behave honourably, despite being despised by his family and his clan, he agrees to lead then against their enemy, and behaves in a statesmanlike way. Tomorrow, I expect we’ll see him in action on the battlefield.
